Quotes from Students:

Peter Coleman

Photo of Peter Coleman, BA Accounting Year 3In a similar way to the second year requiring an “upward gear-shift” compared to year one, the third year has required a further acceleration in effort and application. However, this incremental raising of the bar has been wholly appropriate as my learning skills have improved year on year. The third year has been very rewarding and provided me with confidence in my abilities enough to approach potential employers with what I believe to be a valuable skill-set.

In order to keep up with the workload (tutorial preparation, reading, and coursework), I have found it absolutely essential to prepare and stick to a personal timetable (unlike previous years when I started with the best of intentions and then failed to deliver). Without self-discipline I would have got myself into a real mess!

Correctly referencing my essays represented possibly the greatest challenge in preparing coursework assignments. Early efforts soon taught me to properly detail every reference as I researched and wrote the essay, rather than leaving it until the end! Presentation is a simple way to gain marks, and appropriate titles and headings along with font size and line spacing became second nature (after practice!)

Robiul Islam, BA Accounting Year 3Robiul Islam

The degree year has certainly been the most positive academic year for me at Napier University. The challenging nature of the modules provided me with the opportunity to assess the optimum levels of my skills and identify what needs to be developed.

Coursework for the modules also need to be merited for their benefits in encouraging students to research materials independently. The most valued approach to tackle a coursework, with the beauty of hindsight, is to start early! This gives all the necessary time to digest materials of any level.

The modules’ requirements for referencing, discussion, presentation are also very important in developing professionalism and character, which are valued extremely by employers.

I also felt the need to schedule a suitable independent study plan to further practise tutorial exercises and meet the reading requirements. This gave me a confident stance during the exam period.

Cheryl Wotherspoon, BA Accounting Year 3

So far year 3 has been more challenging and demanding compared to year 2, but at the same time, very rewarding to me.  It has taken my academic abilities to a much further stage, increasing my confidence in finding a job when I finish my degree.

Due to my experiences relating to coursework, I think it is absolutly essential that you get organised and start coursework as early as possible.  The main reason for this is so that you don't find yourself with a massive pile up of coursework assignments, as well as trying to juggle tutorial preparation.  However it is also important to get an early start because the resources you may need in the library may all go!!

Referencing is an absolute must when submitting coursework.  You will, without doubt lose valuable marks if you don't recognise other authors' work if used as well as in the worst case scenario being done for plagiarism.  In order to combat plagiarism, Napier now implements an online detection service.  Presentation is as equally important as referencing as it shows that you can create a professional piece of work, thus gaining you more marks.

Chen Zhang, BA Accounting and Entrepreneurship Year 3Chen Zhang

I am a BA Accounting with entrepreneurship third year student. Third year has been very enjoyable to myself and also very interesting. Prior to year 3 we had only done numbers and was not able to fully discuss the figures. Now I am able to discuss where these figures come from and how it is of use. With this knowledge I gained in third year I am able to talk to others in the business world on a higher level and with a greater understanding of what is happening in the real world

When I do coursework I always try to start early because it requires a lot of work. I first have a look at what the coursework is about and also the requirements. I then look at the marking scheme to see which areas I should concentrate on. The Library and the Internet are the main places I find my information. When I have finished my work I then ask one of my Native speaking classmates to have a look at my work to see if there are any spelling and grammar mistakes.

Referencing is very important. The reason for this is because of plagiarism. This is also important because you respect the original authors who wrote the articles. Presentation is as important as referencing because this shows others that I can write a professional piece of work.
